This Friday is an exciting one! With the release of the much anticipated new album by Lambchop-TRIP, as well as a beautiful reissue of British Sea Power's 'Open Season', which is celebrating it's 15th Anniversary! Let's dig in!

"Lambchop’s Kurt Wagner invited his ever-morphing ensemble to record some covers in Nashville and the resulting album, “Trip,” surely defined the frontman’s creed and genre-blending approach to music.

Trying their hand at Wilco’s “Reservations” returns stellar results. It’s dark and brooding, full of pregnant pause piano and interlaced with soft accoutrements of percussion to deliver a gem well worth the 13 minutes it takes to hear it all.

The band’s take on Mirrors’ “Shirley” is no less impressive. Beginning with the appropriate proto-punk pace, Lambchop’s version nicely gives way to a dramatic down-shifted finish for the song about love just out of reach. There’s a good reason why Wagner and his iterations of Lambchop have stood the test of years, while remaining below the radar for some. Wagner’s artistic visions aren’t for everyone, but they’re well constructed enough to demand respect. Lambchop, again, gives it all."- APNEWS.COM

In the fall of 2019,Lambchop’s Kurt Wagner had a unique idea: In lieu of going on what would become an economically disastrous tour, he would invite the band to Nashville to make a record as a way to provide them with similar financial support and realize something tangible in the process. Each band member was tasked with choosing one song for the band to cover, and leading the recording session to completion each day.

TRIPsounds like a culmination of the band’s older work and current work. There’s a looseness and freedom that recalls their older sound mixed with a group sophistication and innovation derived through the process of playing together for so long. The titleTRIPrefers to the circumstances surrounding its creation and the endeavor of “touring” itself. “It also seems to describe a life in music and the situations we created in our life as a band over the years,” Wagner adds. “It’s been a trip…”-Merge Records

British Sea Power- Open Season 15th Anniversary 2LP (click on image to purchase)

What can I say that hasn't already been said about this album? It's a classic. Through and through. It's been in my possession in one form or another in these last 15 years- Vinyl, cd, dubbed to cassette to listen to in my CD player-less car, MP3... It's stood the test of time. It was a bit of a departure from their first album. Whilst most growth spurts are painful and awkward this one was pleasant to watch AND to hear. This 15th Anniversary edition is a 2LP with the first LP being pressed on that beautiful electric blue vinyl. It contains the original album as recorded by Mads Bjerke (Spiritualized, Primal Scream, Girls Aloud) and mixed by Bill Price (Sex Pistols, The Clash, Sparks). Two tracks were recorded and mixed by Graham Sutton (The Delays, Bark Psychosis) and Phill Brown (Sly Stone, Led Zeppelin, Talk Talk). LP2 is a picture disc containing demos, radio sessions and bonus tracks from that period. The LP package also contains a unique 'assemble your own' zoetrope and the beautiful gatefold contains extensive new sleeve notes.

Back in 2005 Pitchfork gave it a 7.8, I'd say that it's aged well.
